A minor girl was found out to be pregnant after complaining about fever and being admitted to a hospital. A case has been lodged, against the parents and her husband, on the grounds of child marriage. The incident has taken place in Satara, the hometown of the girl. She was taken to the hospital by her brother for a check-up. The hospital performed tests and got to know the girl was pregnant at the age of 17 years only.
The doctor showed vigilance by promptly informing the Satara police about the case. The police filed a complaint against the husband and parents of the minor. Currently, the situation is being looked into by the Pune Police for a detailed investigation.
According to Indian laws, child marriage is illegal and a punishable offence. The legal age for marriage for men in India is 21 years, while for women, it is 18 years. There is a proposal for a bill aiming to increase the minimum marriage for girls to 21 years of age. Child marriage is not only a violation of law but is also a hindrance to the fundamental rights of children that severely affects children's health, safety, education and rights.
