KC Venugopal Moves Motion Of Privilege Against PM Modi - Param Lakhani

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

Pune, 17th March 2023

KC Venugopal moved a motion of privilege on 17th March in the last parliament session against Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of his defamatory comments made on Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in his speech. The prime minister had ignited a direct attack on the members of the Gandhi family for not using the surname “Nehru”. He alleged that Congress used Article 356 to bring down governments that were headed by non-congress parties. Modi claimed that the Indira Gandhi-run government repeated this at least 50 times to disrupt regional parties in states.

“I had read in some newspaper, I have not verified it, but a report said as many as 600 government schemes are only in the name of the Gandhi-Nehru family.” This was the response of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was asked to reply to a debate regarding the motion of thanks in the President’s address.

“...if Nehru ji's name is left out by us, we would correct our mistake as he was the first prime minister of the country. But I do not understand why anyone from his clan is afraid of keeping Nehru's surname? Is there any shame in having the Nehru surname? What is the shame? When the family is not ready to accept such a great personality, why do you keep questioning us,” he said.

Venugopal wrote a notice regarding the speech stating “The above-mentioned remarks prima facie made mockingly are not only disgraceful but also insulting and defamatory vis-a-vis the members of Nehru family, particularly Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Shri Rahul Gandhi who are Members of Lok Sabha." Narendra Modi’s attack was targeted at Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
