Gary Lineker is set to make his return on “Match of the Day”, British Broadcasting Channel’s flagship TV Football review program, after being suspended for breaching the impartiality guidelines of the British Broadcast Council. Gary Lineker is a former footballer who tweeted on 7th March regarding the government’s new policy on immigration as language “not dissimilar to that used in Germany in the 30s” as reported by The Wire. His comment attracted attacks from MPs of the Conservative party. This triggered national debates and a crisis at the BBC.
The BBC suspended Gary Lineker for breaching the impartiality guidelines of the BBC. As a result of his suspension "Match of the Day" went on air without any presenters and contributors. This move was made to appeal for the resignation of Tim Davie who is the director general of the BBC. The BBC failed to find a substitute presenter or contributor for the show. Lineker on the other hand has refused to take down his tweet. The BBC and Lineker spoke over the weekend which led to the BBC management obliging him to comply with the editorial guidelines of the corporation.
Gary Lineker is the highest-paid presenter on the BBC who hosts a TV football review programme. He did not present the FA Cup quarter-final coverage on Sunday due to a cold. Lineker took to his Twitter to share the same “I’ve been silenced… literally, by a nasty cold so, annoyingly, won’t be working at Brighton this afternoon”.
