Delhi Budget Put On Hold by The Central Government - Shruti Pitke

Pune, 21 March 2023

The budget for union territory of Delhi for the year 2023-2024 was to be presented by Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot on Tuesday has been put on hold by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said yesterday while speaking at an event organized by News 18 India.

Chief Minister Kejriwal has written letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to stop Delhi’s Budget. “For the first time in 75-year history, the budget has been stopped. Why are you angry with us Delhiites?”, said Kejriwal in a letter. Authorities in MHA said the budget was stopped after LG sought for clarification on publicity budget.

The LG has sought justification from Delhi on its publicity budget which has been doubled in two years and only half it is spent. He also asked why the benefits of centrally sponsored schemes are not given to people of Delhi.

According to rules, the budget of Delhi is sent to LG for his comments. Further the budget is sent to Ministry of Home Affairs who then sends it to President of India for the ascent. The finance minister Kailash Gahlot has accused the central government. This marks another point of tussle between the center and the Delhi government after the arrest of former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia.

The economic survey and outcome budget was presented by finance minister Gahlot yesterday and the budget was to be presented today.
