Pune, 24th March 2023
Fourteen political parties headed to Supreme Court on 24th March accusing the Central Government headed by the Bhartiya Janta Party of misusing national central agencies of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The petition was filed by several political parties, including the opposition of the Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazahgam and Rashtriya Janta Dal, asking for pre-arrest guidelines. The matter was taken before the Chief Justice Of India DY Chandrachud and Senior Counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi for an urgent listing, as reported by the Baranbench.
“14 political parties have come together, seeking pre-arrest guidelines and their enforcement. Today CBI ED entirely being used against us.” Singhvi commented to Baranbench. It has also been reported that 95% of the probes by central agencies are used against leaders from the opposition party. The listening has agreed to take place on 5th April 2023 by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
The opposition also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister slamming their misuse of CBI and ED earlier in March. The Prime Minister was openly asked about his blatant misusing of the central agencies against members of the Opposition. The leaders had also questioned if India had become an “autocracy” under the ruling BJP government.
